Sr. Paula Kiersey, OCSO, Iconographer

Biographical Information:

Sr. Paula Kiersey is a nun in the only Cistercian convent in Ireland: St. Mary's Abbey, Glencairn, in County Waterford. She studied art in Dublin, Paris and Rome before taking the veil, and has been writing icons for thirty years. She has written icons for patrons throughout the world including a presentation to the late Basil Cardinal Hume. She still continues to paint icons, though no longer does commissions. Sr. Paula feels strongly that in our heavily visual culture, the Church is in need of the visual arts to remind us of the spiritual realm. Egg tempera is her medium and she writes icons of ancient patterns like St. John the Baptist, as well as modern saints like Therese of Lisieux all done in the classic Byzantine style.
