Sheryl Phipps, Calligrapher

Biographical Information

Sheryl has been an artist for more than 20 years. Her exposure to calligraphy began with introductory courses in college and she went on to receive a degree in art. During the past ten years, Sheryl has concentrated in different areas of calligraphy, taking classes with teachers from the United States and England. She works extensively in the decoration and illumination of letters, using ancient techniques which utilize 23K gold leaf, watercolor, gouache, and ink. She has chosen to specialize in this area; studying not only the art of applying gold leaf to the text, but also the technical aspects of lettering from different centuries. Sheryl is currently a board member of the National Association for the Calligraphic Arts and past president of the Calligraphic Arts Guild of Central Iowa. Her work has been exhibited in galleries in central Iowa and is in private collections.
