THE NUREMBERG CHRONICLE, published in 1493, contains 1809 woodcuts by artists Michael Wolgemuth (1434?-1519) and Wilhelm Pleydenwurff (1460-1494) who established a new, higher standard for European graphic art. Their work was in the service of a 600-page text compiled by Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), a history of the world from creation through the year 1493. While some eight hundred known copies of the Latin publication survive today, only about 400 copies of the German edition are extant. Conception Abbey’s Nuremberg Chronicle is a rare German translation, one of only forty-four found in the United States.
