Maura Nolan Winkler

Biographical Information:

Maura studied calligraphy with Maury Nemoy at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her goal as a calligrapher is to honor the traditional modes of expression while updating her work with a contemporary flair. The same artistic goal motivates her work in other media; she exhibits her oil paintings, drawings and monotypes in galleries and with consultants throughout the United States, in London and in Hong Kong.

She has been doing calligraphy as a free lance artist since 1965, imparting her distinctive style to calendar art, certificates, wedding invitations, and greeting cards. Her work has enabled her to obtain fellowships both here and abroad. She has earned fellowships in Virginia, Arizona, New Mexico and California; she has studied in Italy, worked on an art fellowship in Mexico, and lived in France while supporting herself with calligraphic work for American clients. She affirms that her experiences have enriched not only her life, but her art as well.

She now lives with her husband, Bill, a sculptor, in a small town in New Mexico, where they enjoy the quiet and closeness of the natural world. Maura notes that this quiet enables her to devote more time to her art, and helps her to maintain the inner calm necessary to find and express the essence of her subject, whether in calligraphy, illustration or fine art. She feels blessed to have such a life.
