...this is love, not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Easter icon of the risen Christ from St Lukes Byzantine Catholic Church, Sugar Creek, MO.
The Resurrection of Christ, the totality of salvation, is depicted in victory and glory. A mandorla of light radiates from behind the risen Christ, showing His divinity; His human form depicts His humanity. Christ is reaching down to Adam, who represents us all. Christ is pulling up Adam by his wrist, signifying a humbling submission to God, His will, and dependence upon God, and raising him to glory. Surrounding Christ are the righteous men and women in the Old Testament and those faithful to the Covenant. Their holiness promised them Heaven, but Adam and Eve’s sin barred them from entering. The redemptive act of Jesus Christ has freed them and us to a life of eternal glory. The two naked figures at the bottom symbolize men and women who died and were in Sheol until Christ's Resurrection. The shattered doors and empty tomb signify that Christ‘s resurrection has trampled death and granted eternal life to those in the tomb.
