Incorporating such diverse influences as the hieratic otherworldliness of Orthodox iconography and the geometric precision of ancient Egyptian mural paintings, the Beuronese style imparted a renewed sense of transcendence to church art, making it a medium by which the observer might comtemplate holy truths without distractions from the medium itself. It was not art for its own sake, but art for a higher purpose.
