Jesus grasps the hand of frightened St. Peter who is overwhelmed by the waves and the wind. A net full of fish at the right recalls the post-Resurrection account of Peter's encounter with the risen Lord (John 21) when Jesus asks him three times "Peter, do you love me?" The rooster on the pillar at the left calls to mind Peter's denial of Christ on three occasions. Peter now has the opportunity to reverse his denial by professing his love for and belief in the Risen Christ.
Wood-mounted icons are on 5/8" ProWood® Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) with a wood-look foil finish, with tee-slots milled in the back for easy hanging. Icons are finished in classic cherry to replicate the traditional icon red, in keeping with Byzantine tradition. (Ancient icon board edges were frequently coated with red bole, a form of clay). Each mounted icon comes with a descriptive pamphlet explaining the symbolism and history of the image.
Please allow 5-10 business days for orders of 20 or more icons.
Our icon designs are also available as unmounted prints in sanctuary-size enlargements up to 38 inches wide. The latest technology enables enlargement without sacrificing quality. We do not currently have the ability to mount these prints on wood or any other material. You may purchase your own frame from a custom frame shop. Call 800-889-0105 for pricing and ordering.
Peter, Do You Love Me? (Pierre, m'aimes-tu?)
This icon image combines two different encounters between Jesus and St. Peter. After Jesus has commanded Peter to come to him upon the water (Matthew 14:29), he grasps the hand of frightened Peter who is overwhelmed by the wind and the waves. The net full of fish calls to mind the post-Resurrection account of Peter jumping into the water to run toward shore when John recognizes Jesus preparing a meal for them on a charcoal fire (John 21:6-16). In this scene, Jesus asks Peter three times "Do you love me?" Peter affirms his love for the Lord three times in contrast to his three denials of Christ predicted in Matthew 26:34. A rooster is perched on a pillar at the left of the scene reminding us of Peter's denial of Christ, which has now become an affirmation of faith in the Risen Jesus.
