In 1531 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to native Mexican convert St. Juan Diego on the mountain of Tepeyac near Mexico City. Her miraculous sign of love for the people of the New World was to impress her image on his tilma or mantle. Through this holy image many people have been brought to belief in Christ; her power to draw souls to her son continues even today.
Icon holy cards are 3" x 5", a convenient size for use as gifts or bookmarks. The backs are blank except for a faint colophon at the bottom, leaving plenty of room for custom imprinting with your own message.
In 1531 the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to native Mexican convert Juan Diego on the mountain of Tepeyac near Mexico City. Her miraculous sign of love for the people of the New World was the impression of her image on his tilma, or mantle. Mary chose to present herself as a woman bearing traits of both European and native Mexican peoples, thus signifying that she is mother of all. The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe blends traditional Marian imagery (drawn from the figure described in Revelation 12:1) with native Mexican religious emblems. Unlike other Marian images, this one is directly linked to the apparition and is not based on a description from a vision. The feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12; under this title she has been named patroness of Mexico, the Philippines, and all the Americas. Through this holy image many people have been brought to belief in Christ; her power to draw souls to her son continues even today.
