This icon of unknown origin depicts St. Paul in the red of martyrdom and the green of apostleship. This icon serves as a poignant reminder that we, too, are continually called to conversion and that our lives are to be a witness to the transforming power of the Gospel of Christ.
Icon holy cards are 3" x 5", a convenient size for use as gifts or bookmarks. The backs are blank except for a faint colophon at the bottom, leaving plenty of room for custom imprinting with your own message.
The canonical portrait of St. Paul is immediately recognizable in this image, based as it is upon an actual description found in the extra-biblical source The Acts of Paul and Thecla. "And he saw Paul coming, a man small in size, bald-headed, bandy-legged, well-built, with eyebrows meeting, rather long-nosed, full of grace." (Acts 2-4). A soft light coming from an invisible source at the left illuminates St. Paul's face with an ethereal glow. The source of that light is the face of Christ, the same light which the apostle witnessed on the road to Damascus.
The high forehead is symbolic of wisdom. The red himation, a garment worn over the left shoulder and tucked under on the right, is representative of the blood of martyrdom. St. Paul holds in his left hand and clasps with his right the book of the Gospels, indicating the centrality of the Gospel in his preaching and ministry. The straps of Paul's sandals are made of thorns or briers, a reminder not only of his martyrdom but also the mysterious and unnamed affliction he bore throughout his life.
